Pierre Poilievre

Introduction

Pierre Marcel Poilievre was born on June 3, 1979, in Calgary, Alberta, and is the leader of the Conservative Party of Canada. Pierre was adopted by schoolteachers shortly after birth, his father being French Canadian. He grew up in a modest household, played ice hockey, and developed an interest in politics at a young age. He became active in the Reform Party and Progressive Conservative Association, engaging in political activities and attending conventions. His parents separated when he was a teenager, and his father later came out as gay.

Early life

Pierre Poilievre worked at Telus and briefly as a journalist before studying international relations at the University of Calgary. He became involved in politics, gaining recognition for his essay titled “Building Canada Through Freedom.” In his early twenties, he was an organizer supporting Stockwell Day as the leader of the Canadian Alliance party. Poilievre later worked as an advisor for Day and advocated for the merger of the Canadian Alliance and Progressive Conservative parties. He founded 3D Contact Inc. and ran for MP as part of the newly formed Conservative Party of Canada after the merger.

Political Career

From 2004 to 2013, Pierre Poilievre began his political career as a young Conservative MP, advocating for hospital funding and introducing bills related to recall of MPs and parental responsibility. He served as Parliamentary Secretary and later as Minister of State for Democratic Reform and Minister of Employment and Social Development. As finance critic, he challenged the government on issues like the WE Charity scandal. In 2022, he became the Conservative Party leader, leading the party in addressing government policies and spending as Opposition Leader. 

Pierre Poilievre is a self-described libertarian and “true conservative”. He calls for more telecom competition, defunding the CBC, blames bureaucracy for housing issues, and addresses climate change with green tech. He supports abortion rights, same-sex marriage, and soft drug legalization but opposes decriminalizing hard drugs. Poilievre favors freedom of speech, pro-immigration policies, and upholds Canada’s public healthcare. He opposes the long-gun registry and certain firearms bans.

Personal Life

Pierre Poilievre dated Jenni Byrne until 2011. In January 2018, he married Anaida Galindo, and they have two children together – a daughter born on October 17, 2018, and a son born on September 12, 2021. Poilievre is bilingual, fluent in both English and French.
