Gender Identity

Introduction

Gender identity is an individual’s perception of their own gender, which may or may not correspond with the sex they were assigned at birth. It refers to the perception of being male, female, or something else. A vast majority of people’s gender identity aligns with the sex they were assigned at birth (this is known as “cisgender”). A growing percentage of people identify as transgender, as they perceive their gender to differ from their sex. Modern gender identity encompasses a spectrum of identities, including but not limited to non-binary, genderqueer, and genderfluid, going beyond the traditional male and female classifications.

Conservative Perspective

Most conservatives believe that gender is inherently linked to biological sex and should not be viewed as a separate construct. Some conservatives accept the notion of gender as a social construct, differences in opinion are often geographical (e.g. conservatives in Canada accept gender fluidity more often than those in Montana). Conservatives often argue that individuals are either male or female based on their physical reproductive anatomy, and the idea of gender identity as a separate inner experience is misleading and potentially harmful.

Biology and Gender

One of the key arguments put forth by conservatives is that the concept of gender identity undermines the traditional understanding of gender, which is equated with one’s biological sex in most societies around the world and throughout history. They contend that gender identity, as advocated by progressives, allows for a wide range of self-identified gender expressions that may not align with an individual’s biological sex. This goes against the natural order of male and female roles, leading to confusion and potential social decline.

Conservatives often draw upon the importance of biology in shaping human behavior and relationships. They assert that healthy societies are oriented towards reproduction and forming families, and that gender norms based on biological sex facilitate stable and harmonious male-female relationships. By accepting one’s biological sex as an inherent attribute, conservatives believe individuals are more likely to experience comfort and well-being.

Religion and Gender

Religious conservatives in particular view the male and female sexes as God-given and divinely ordained attributes. They argue that these attributes should be embraced and not altered, as altering one’s biological sex through invasive medical interventions contradicts religious beliefs and natural designations.

Children and Gender

Concerns about introducing the concept of gender identity to children are also prominent among conservatives. They argue that young children are still developing their understanding of being male or female and may not fully grasp the complexities of gender identity. Introducing this idea at a young age could lead to confusion and potentially harmful consequences, such as invasive medical interventions that may have long-term irreversible effects.
