Introduction

Gun control involves rules and laws that manage how guns are made, sold, owned, and used. These rules aim to make sure that people use guns responsibly, prevent gun-related harm, and keep the public safe. They can include things like background checks before buying a gun, limits on certain types of guns, and requirements for gun owners to have licenses. The goal is to let people own guns while making sure they’re used safely and don’t cause harm.

Conservative Perspective

While the right to bear arms is enshrined in the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, conservatives view this right as essential not only for individual self-defense but also as a safeguard against potential government tyranny. They argue that an armed populace can serve as a deterrent against oppressive regimes and an ultimate defense of liberty.

Conservatives believe that gun rights are crucial for everyone, especially individuals who may be physically weaker or living in dangerous areas. The ability to possess firearms allows citizens to level the playing field when facing potential threats. The concept of self-defense is central to conservatives’ support for gun ownership, as they contend that armed citizens can protect themselves and their loved ones from harm.

Violence & Guns

Activists join Senate Democrats outside the Capitol to demand action on gun control legislation after a gunman killed 19 children and two teachers at a Texas elementary school this week, in Washington, Thursday, May 26, 2022.

Conservatives assert that banning guns does not effectively curb violence or deaths. Instead, it merely shifts the dynamics of violence, leaving law-abiding citizens more vulnerable while emboldening violent criminals. Restricting gun rights may also disproportionately impact economically disadvantaged communities that rely on firearms for self-protection. Conservatives believe the right to bear arms is essential in preserving the safety and security of individuals, irrespective of background or location.

A key aspect of conservatives’ stance on gun control is their opposition to government intervention in limiting individuals’ ability to defend themselves. They view it as a matter of personal liberty and individual responsibility, aligning with the broader principles of limited government interference in citizens’ lives. Conservatives often emphasize the importance of upholding the Second Amendment and protecting gun rights as a means to safeguard individual freedoms.

Conservatives & Gun Control outside the USA

Although American conservatives are perhaps the most ardent defenders of gun rights in the world, conservatives in other countries are often more pro-gun than their liberal or progressive counterparts.

Background Checks

Conservatives believe in background checks. The question is, what level of background check? On this topic, there is a wide variety of opinions amongst conservatives. Some think that minimal background checks are sufficient, just enough to keep violent felons away from guns. Whereas other conservatives believe that more stringent background checks are acceptable as long as law abiding, clean record citizens can acquire firearms relatively easily.
