Introduction

Albert Jay Nock (October 13, 1870 – August 19, 1945) was an American libertarian author, editor, and social critic. Renowned for his fierce opposition to state influence, his philosophical outlook challenged prevailing notions of governance and societal organization. Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Nock was raised by a priest father and steelworker mother. He attended St. Stephen’s College and briefly pursued a career in minor league baseball before becoming an ordained Episcopal priest in 1897.
Opposition to the State
Nock’s deep-seated belief in individual liberty and his self-proclaimed identity as a philosophical anarchist fueled his passionate critique of the state. He famously characterized the state as a “monopoly of crime,” emphasizing his disdain for centralized authority, regulation, and mandatory education. Nock’s writings, including “Our Enemy, the State” and “Memoirs of a Superfluous Man,” argued for a society detached from state control and based on voluntary cooperation.
Economic Stance
Nock’s economic philosophy centered on the importance of economic freedom as a cornerstone of individual liberty. During the years of the Great Depression, Nock emerged as a fervent critic of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. He believed that the expansion of state power through the New Deal was a fundamental threat to personal liberty, arguing that it perpetuated economic woes rather than alleviating them.
Anti-War
Nock’s opposition to war further solidified his reputation as a staunch libertarian thinker. He decried war’s tendency to foster militarization, collectivization, and loss of life.
Controversies and Late-life Views
Despite his substantial contributions, Nock’s legacy is clouded by the emergence of anti-Semitic and anti-democratic remarks marked a departure from his earlier intellectual pursuits.
