Defunding the Police

Introduction

Defunding the police, a modern socio-political movement, advocates for reallocating or redirecting funds from law enforcement agencies to other social services. This movement emerged in response to concerns about perceived police brutality and systemic racism. The term “defund the police” became common during the George Floyd protests in May 2020.  

The movement seeks to address root causes of crime and social issues by redistributing resources toward education, mental health services, housing, and community-based initiatives. The argument is that traditional approaches to law enforcement increase social inequalities and negatively impact marginalized communities. Not all elements of this movement push for the complete elimination of law enforcement agencies but instead they call for a reassessment of their role and funding priorities.^[1]

The movement has sparked debates over the appropriate balance between investing in community-based solutions and maintaining law and order. As communities grapple with the complexities of policing, discussions surrounding defunding the police remain central to broader conversations on criminal justice reform and the role of law enforcement in modern society.

Conservative perspective

There are three main reasons on why conservatives are highly critical of defunding the police. First, conservatives are strong advocates for law and order. Second, conservatives oppose the abolition of the police forces and push for reforms instead. Third, conservatives focus on initiatives that help prevent crimes.

Law and order

Many conservatives prioritize law and order, emphasizing the essential role of law enforcement in maintaining public safety and order, arguing that reducing police funding compromises the ability of law enforcement agencies to respond effectively to crime. Additionally, conservatives express concerns that defunding the police could lead to increased crime rates and jeopardize the safety of law-abiding citizens and putting communities at risk. That’s why conservatives advocate for a strong and well-funded police presence to deter criminal activity and protect communities.^[2]
 
If there are reduced police forces in an area, often crime increases. Increased crime makes living conditions worse for residents, discourages local businesses for fear of being robbed or vandalized, and ends up harming the very people “defunders” were trying to help.

Opposition to abolition and alternative solutions

Many conservatives are critical of more radical calls for abolishing the police altogether, asserting that a complete elimination of law enforcement would leave a void in public safety, and alternative solutions should focus on improving existing systems rather than dismantling them. Moreover, conservatives argue for reforms within law enforcement agencies instead of advocating for defunding the police. Conservatives support measures such as increased training, improved community policing efforts, and enhanced transparency to address issues of accountability and build trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve.^[3]

Focus on Crime Prevention

Conservatives often stress the importance of addressing the root causes of crime through community-based initiatives and social programs rather than solely relying on punitive measures. That’s why conservatives advocate for a comprehensive approach that addresses social issues without necessarily reducing police budgets. An example of this would be the conservative support for initiatives that enhance community cohesion, investing in programs that improve the skills of individuals, which improves their life and breaks the cycle of poverty.
