Economic Inequality

Introduction

Economic inequality is the unequal distribution of income and wealth among individuals or groups within a society. It can appear in different forms, including income inequality, which is the disparities in earnings between individuals or households, and wealth inequality, which is the differences in asset ownership and net worth. 

Economic inequality is complex and influenced by various factors, such as differences in education, employment, inheritance, and government policies. These inequalities can have deep social, economic, and political consequences, impacting access to education, healthcare, housing, and other essential resources.^[1]

Historically, economic inequality has been a persistent feature of human societies, with varying degrees of inequality observed across different cultures and time periods. Industrialization, globalization, technological advancements, and shifts in government policies have all influenced economic inequality, leading to periods of both widening and narrowing gaps between the rich and the poor. 

Governments aim to address economic inequality adopting a combination of policy measures aimed at promoting equal opportunity, redistributing wealth through taxation and social welfare programs.

Conservative Perspective

There are three main considerations when it comes to the conservative view on economic inequality: meritocracy and individual responsibility, redistribution of Wealth, equality of opportunity.

Meritocracy and Individual Responsibility

Conservatives view economic inequality as a natural outcome of differences between individuals in a society, pointing to the importance of individual effort, talent, and merit in determining one’s economic outcomes. Conservatives argue that a free-market economy, with limited government intervention, allows individuals to succeed based on their own abilities and hard work, in addition to taking ownership of their financial well-being through education, job training, and responsible financial management.^[2] For conservatives, there is nothing inherently wrong with wealth/income inequality, so long as it doesn’t stem from vast differences in opportunities. People have different abilities, different work ethics, and make different choices. These differences result in different levels in wealth. Although there isn’t anything inherently wrong in differences of wealth, it is of course charitable for those with wealth to help those without wealth.

Opposition to Redistribution of Wealth

Conservatives express skepticism of government efforts to redistribute wealth and income through taxation and social welfare programs, arguing that such measures disincentivize productivity, stifle economic growth, and undermine individual initiative. Moreover, conservatives find it immoral to forcibly take money from someone who earned it honestly and give it to others. Instead, conservatives advocate for policies that promote economic growth, job creation, and entrepreneurship as the most effective means of addressing poverty and economic inequality.^[3]

Equal Opportunity over Equal Outcomes

Conservatives prioritize equality of opportunity over equality of outcome. The belief is that policies should aim to level the playing field by providing access to education, training, and economic opportunity for all individuals, regardless of background. Conservative criticize policies that seek to establish equal outcomes through wealth redistribution or affirmative action, unlike liberals, who favor such policies arguing citing concerns about social justice.
