Editorial Method

The Encyclopedia of Conservatism is a reference work on conservative thought: its philosophers, concepts, institutions, movements and controversies. It is published by The Encyclopedia of Conservatism Ltd., an Ontario corporation, and edited by William A. Van Den Broek. This page describes how entries are produced, verified and attributed, and how to cite them.

Standards

Every entry published or revised since May 2026 is written to a fixed editorial standard. Each entry engages at least two named theorists with attribution, drawn from the conservative canon and its interlocutors: Burke, Kirk, Oakeshott, Scruton, Nisbet, Hayek, MacIntyre and others. Each contains at least one direct quotation from a primary source, cited in endnotes, with a citation roughly every 250 words. Each closes on a defended reading of its subject rather than a summary that commits to nothing. Entries are expected to state the strongest version of the positions they examine, including positions the conservative tradition rejects.

Entries published before May 2026 are being revised to this standard. Until revised, older entries should be read as general reference rather than scholarly treatment.

Drafting and verification

Entries are drafted with the assistance of large language models working under the encyclopedia’s editorial standards and house style. Machine drafting is a production method, not an editorial authority. Before publication, each entry passes verification in which quotations are traced to their primary sources, citations are checked against the works cited, and claims about theology, the history of political thought and church teaching are checked against primary or near-primary texts. Entries that fail verification are corrected or withheld from publication. Final editorial responsibility for everything published rests with the editor.

Bylines

Entries signed by a named author are that author’s work and carry that author’s views. Entries signed by The Editors of The Encyclopedia of Conservatism are institutional entries produced under the method described above. The editor’s personal byline appears only on entries he has written or substantially reworked himself.

Corrections

Readers who find an error of fact, quotation or citation are asked to report it through the contact page. Verified corrections are made in place and the entry’s revision date is updated.

How to cite

Entries carry stable URLs and machine-readable metadata (schema.org Article markup with publication and revision dates). A citation should give the byline, entry title, the encyclopedia, the URL and the date of access:
