Introduction
A monopoly happens when one or a few companies dominate an industry, giving them immense control over the market. They can set prices, limit competition, and influence the industry due to their overwhelming presence and power. Tech monopoly refers to the giant power that a few select tech companies (mainly social media companies in the context of politics) hold the power to decide what is and is not allowed on their platform.
Conservative Perspective
Conservatives have expressed growing concern over the rise of tech monopolies, particularly the power wielded by Big Tech giants such as Google, Amazon, YouTube, and Facebook. As proponents of free markets, conservatives emphasize the importance of functioning markets and competition. However, they believe that the dominance of these tech giants, which have amassed enormous economic, cultural, and political power, undermines the principles of a free market and has created an environment often hostile to right wing viewpoints.
Anticompetitive behavior

One key issue that conservatives highlight is the anticompetitive behavior exhibited by Big Tech companies. These tech giants use their market power to crush competition, leading to the closure of small businesses and the reduction of consumer choice. Big Tech companies that can effectively wipe out a competitor’s product overnight, as seen in the case of Parler, a startup social media application removed from major platforms like Amazon, Apple, and Google.
Political Bias
Conservatives also point to the biased content moderation policies of Big Tech platforms, which they claim result in the censorship of conservative voices. They argue that the power to control the flow of information in the public square should not be concentrated in the hands of a few tech companies. YouTube has been the major culprit on this issue, with many right-wing YouTubers having their content demonetized and removed at a rate far higher than for left wing content.
